|Decline in Indian demand a major factor in softer outlook for foreign enrolment in US higher education in 2026/27

In a survey of US higher education institutions, 59% are reporting lower international application volumes for this year and 63% expect a decline in foreign student numbers for 2026/27. 

Among major sending markets, softening demand for India appears to be an important contributor to the outlook for the coming academic year with 61% of responding institutions reporting declining application volumes from India in particular.

|Australia: As visa applications from foreign students fall, the government has set the national target for new international students in 2027

Australia’s university and vocational education (VET) sectors will receive the same allocation in 2027 for new international students as in 2026 – 295,000.

The government is satisfied that its National Planning Level (NPL) system is achieving its aim of slowing the growth of international student numbers in Australia. Visa applications and commencements are down – or trending downwards – across the Australian sector.

|Independent K-12 schools in the UK hosting fewer international students this year 

Since 1 January 2025, it has been more expensive to study at a private school in the UK.vThis is because of a 20% value-added tax (VAT) on tuition and boarding school fees that has been in effect since that time.

The number of international students in K-12 independent schools in the UK is declining, with significant decreases from China.

|US regulatory agenda for 2026 aims to end "duration of status" and introduce Optional Practical Training and H-1B reforms 

A new regulatory agenda has just been published by the US government.
